Hello My Dearest NoP Readers!
How I have missed you so. I need to thank the amazing NoP team for being so wonderful when I asked for a leave of absence. I’m heartbroken to share that my mother has passed away, but comforted that she was in no pain and was at peace. (Thank you Hospice of Michigan!)
For those of you who have been sitting where I am, you know that every day is a new challenge. It’s been a little over two months and slowly I’m remembering how to breathe…ehhhh sometimes. Mostly I eat a lot of cookies. I know it’s going to be a long road home, but it feels great to be with you all again.
So how have I managed to get out of bed, go to work, and write a blog? Devouring books. Specifically, cozy mysteries, cowboys, and TJ Klune.
Here are the books that keep me sane:
TJ Klune – The Lightning-Struck Heart
This takes the cake for my FAVORITE AUDIOBOOK OF ALL TIME (sorry The Raven Boys, you’re now second.) If I break down and have a crying fit, this is the only thing that can make me stop most days. It’s very NSFW and FABULOUS. You’re welcome.
Once upon a time, in an alleyway in the slums of the City Of Lockes, a young and somewhat lonely boy named Sam Haversford turns a group of teenage douchebags into stone completely by accident.
Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam’s pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King’s Wizard, Morgan of Shadows.
When Sam’s fourteen, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds.
At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle—Knight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed.
Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can’t control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan’s boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have.
Or so he thinks.
I will be #TeamGary forever. Bonus? The audiobook is Whispersync, so you can get the ebook and audio for one low price.
Best part? There’s a bonus chapter on TJ’s website AND there are more books coming out this year. YEEEEEES!
Jana DeLeon – Miss Fortune Series
Louisiana Longshot – Miss Fortune Mystery #1
It was a hell of a longshot…
With a leak at the CIA and a price on her head by one of the world’s largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small, bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she’s determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.
Unfortunately, she hasn’t even unpacked a suitcase before her newly-inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly-sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she’s not careful, this investigation may blow her cover and get her killed.
Armed with her considerable skills and a group of old ladies referred to by locals as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it’s too late.
These books were fun, laugh-out-loud, and quick reads. There’s even a slow burning romance. Fair warning, the series is not finished yet, but the books wrap up nicely with each ending.
Okay, yeah, I know this isn’t the cover for A Cowboy Returns, but I adore all these books and let’s be honest, Cowboy Strong has the best cover. Really awesome heroes, really fabulous heroines, and amazing animals that make me want to be on a ranch. Until I had to do any work involving poop or lifting…
I blew through her entire cowboy series in like 4 days because, well, COWBOYS! Here’s an excerpt from A Cowboy Returns:
Eli Covington erased all traces of his cowboy upbringing to become a high-powered attorney. Then his father dies, and his brothers need him to rescue the family ranch. So, after fourteen years, Eli returns to the life he left behind—and the one woman he can’t resist.
Veterinarian Reagan Matthews was furious with Eli for leaving her all those years ago, and yet she was never quite able to let him go. Their attraction is as incendiary as ever, and Eli is very good at stoking the flames. But Eli doesn’t belong in her world, any more than Reagan belongs in his. So until Eli leaves for good, why not take her pleasure where she can? Pleasure only her cowboy can provide…
Kelli power packs each sentence to make it punch, and the family dynamics are spot on. I know she’s married to an IRL cowboy, so you can bet everything is spot on accurate in terms of ranching. I’m pretty much obsessed with her books, GIVE ME MORE NOW, KELLI!
Last week, I was able to add Netflix into the rotation. The two shows nearly always on, even if I’m reading, are:
This show is everything I want a cooking show to be. Everyone is so friendly and encouraging! I don’t know what half the stuff they’re making is, which is half the fun. There are so many puns and lots of dry humor. And the accents? NOMNOMNOM.
I only have two words to sum up everything about this epic and well done reunion:
It’s good to be back. I’ve missed you all.
On this day in 1882 Jessie Redmon Fauset was born. She was an American author, poet and editor, editor for the NAACP magazine The Crisis and the children’s magazine Brownies’ Book, considered one of the most intelligent novelists of the Harlem Renaissance (d. 1961)
Hunting Witch Hazel: Now available
I was happy with my West Coast life – 24-hour pizza delivery and bikini-clad bodies as far as the eye could see. Now I’m in the small-ass town of Hayvenwood to extract a ransom to save my little brother’s life. And that ransom is locked inside of the sexiest witch I have ever met, Hazel Evanora.
