Interview: Chérie de Sues

Please welcome Chérie de Sues, author of Tales of the Red Moon Clan, which has been garnering enthusiastic reviews. You can drop by her website for a full list of publications, or catch the latest news on her blog. If you’re on Twitter, be sure to follow her and friend her on Facebook. I had a chance to ask Chérie a few questions about writing, life and inspiration.

If you were a book, what would your tagline be?

Deep fathoms

What inspired Tales of the Red Moon Clan?

I have a fascination with Native American Indians. Neol is Navajo and a medicine man from his Red Moon Clan. I researched the shape-shifting legends and found a rich and gritty tale of a bounty hunter and assistant DA in Oregon. I can’t wait to finish the next in a three part stand-alone series of three cousins from the Red Moon Clan who find love.

In what genres do you write?

Suspense and Paranormal suspense in various heat levels.

What started you writing romance?

My mother and father both wrote in their spare time. My father likes Science Fiction and my mother enjoyed romance. I’m a suspense buff and combine paranormal and suspense on every paranormal novel.

What writers and films have influenced you?

I read horror fiction by Dean Koontz and Stephen King, which lured me to try suspense. I want desperation in my romance novels when I read or watch a romance film. Make the couple go through hell, before they can be together. That desire has found a way into my writing and “Tales of the Red Moon Clan” is about how far a man will go for his one true mate.

How did you develop your craft?

Years of writing for newspapers, magazines, short stories and fillers for newsletters. LOL. I asked everyone to print my writing until I became a full-time author.

What’s sexy?

So much is sexy. Simple touches with emotion, a smile from an attractive man and one flower given after passion. Giving from the heart is sexier than sending flowers through an online service to your doorstep. I’d rather receive a blooming weed with the right feelings, than two dozen roses from a cold man.

What makes you laugh?

Damn, I’m easy. I laugh at weird, cute, stupid (usually my own behavior) and bad jokes. I see the world through rose colored glasses and am enjoying the ride.

Do you ever incorporate real people into your stories?

Sure, all the time. My personal experiences have taken me all over the planet and I’ve met some incredible people. Of course, I combine people I know to make a fresh new character, but I take what works from people I know.

How do you balance writing with the rest of your life?

Writing is first, everything else is second. Well, my Irish terrier, Reilly does a great job of bossing me around, but I write 10-12 hours a day. My friends “kidnap” me and I bring the computer. I’m addicted.

What’s the most common mistake people make about you?

They equate a sharp mind with a sharp tongue. I say what I want and don’t filter my words very well. That’s another good reason to stay in my office and write. Laughing! I am HORRIBLE with emails and often have to clean up a verbal mess when someone gets their panties in a bunch.

What ambitions do you have ahead of you?

I want to finish a series with “Tales of the Red Moon Clan” and have another series I’m starting with “Lacy: A Bad Girl’s Revenge”. Lacy will be one of the first releases for Noble Romance Publishing‘s BAD GIRL line of romances. Very cool to write a bad girl, check out the teaser excerpt at my website.

What’s the best advice you ever received?

You can be anything or anybody you want to be. My father told me that and I took his advice to heart. I went on and received a doctorate and worked in open heart/thoracic surgery, until I became a full-time author.

What would be your ideal vacation?

A Roman Holiday by cruise ship. Love the ambience of Italy, wine and of course handsome men!

What’s next for you?

“Lacy: A Bad Girl’s Revenge”, a short story will be followed by the novel “Lacy: A Bad Girl’s Romance”. I’m excited to do this project for Noble Romance and can’t wait for readers to give me feedback about a bad girl finding romance and love!

And now, an excerpt from Tales of the Red Moon Clan:

“Hungry?” She whispered.

Sara looked up into feral eyes. His hunger claimed her with a powerful and direct gaze. Her lips parted. Animal heat sizzled between them like a hot wire.

With quick reflexes, Neol pulled her into him, tugging her hair back to seek her mouth. Her arms slid around his neck, taking fistfuls of black hair as his passion surrounded her. She nibbled his lip and slid her tongue sensually against his in response as he pulled her closer.

Neol’s body bucked against her when she bit down on his lip and his possessive growl made Sara quiver with need. He moved under her snug t-shirt and filled his hand with her breast, rolling his thumb across the sensitive nipple.

She moaned with the sensation as he brought his fingers under her bra to touch the sensitive skin underneath.

She rubbed against his hard body like a cat in heat, desperately wanting to feel what she’d seen in the moonlight. Neol backed her toward the bed as his hands loosened the bra. With a quick tug, Sara became naked from the waist up.

He laid her gently onto the soft flannel and quickly took his shirt off over his head. His gaze feasted on her in the glow of the fire. His hands went for the zipper on his jeans.

Her eyes couldn’t get enough of him as the fabric slid down and he revealed himself to her. Neol stood fully aroused then moved toward her like a predator. She quivered with pleasure. His muscles rippled as he leaned over her body and licked at the exposed flesh on her stomach and inhaled deeply.

“I can smell your scent, your heat.” Neol’s rough voice mixed with a guttural purr of desire as he leaned up, piercing her soul with golden eyes. “You would have me? Knowing what I am?”

Hearing Neol’s plea for acceptance as a man melted Sara’s heart. How long had he been without a woman, because of the necessity for secrecy? Her hands moved to his smooth, ripped chest and she raked her nails gently downward. Neol exhaled a fast breath and shuddered with her touch.

“What you are is part of why I want you, Neol.” Sara spoke quietly and simply as her body pulsed with desire for this strange Navajo shape-shifter.

A sudden snap of a pine splitting from lightning and a roar of thunder close behind rattled the metal roof. She trembled from the sound—Neol’s name meant storm.

“I’ve waited so long to hear those words, Sara.” His mouth slowly descended to hers, and his fingertips followed the curve of her breast. He changed direction, tracing lazy circles to the zipper of her jeans. Her body flushed with heat from the pleasure, as his gentle, insistent hands pulled down her jeans and lacey thong. Lightning snapped brightly across the wall and the thunder rolled loudly far away. She shivered.

“Be still for me, Sara; you’re safe with me.”

Chérie, I have to say I was really surprised to hear about your medical background. It seems like a fairly rare path to romance, but who knows? Maybe it’s more common than I would think.

  4. How amazing you’ve transitioned from working ON the heart to writing about all matters of the heart!

  5. I know, right? The human heart is capable of such wonder and compassion. I’ve always had a calling for medicine and writing. I finally wrote a medical based thriller romance recently, maybe combining the two will be karma for me.

  6. ~Sia McKye~ says:

    Intriguing premise, Cherie.

I like your dad’s advice. I got the same message from my Mom and tell it to my son. Empowering words, when you think about it.

    Thanks for stopping by, Sia!
