Contest & Interview with Erotic Paranormal Romance Author J. Hali Steele

Nights of Passion is thrilled to welcome back Erotic Paranormal Romance Author J. Hali Steele. For our readers that haven’t met you yet, can you tell us something about your background that we don’t know.

Hi Susan, thanks for having me back at Nights of Passion. I’m a pretty open book and there is not a lot folks don’t know about me. Heck, let me see if I can find an interesting tidbit to tell them…ooh, I know. I took a trip to New Orleans with my sister and we boarded in Philadelphia with no problems. We had a connection in St. Louis where my purse on the belt caused a stir…turns out I had a “secret weapon” in there. It was a multi-tool, you know one of those knifey like things that has screwdrivers and other tools that flip out. Well, they wanted to confiscate it and as it was a gift I cherished (weird, huh? I cherished a tool lol) I insisted on filling out an envelope to mail it back to my home, which they graciously allowed me to do since it had already slipped through one check point.

What is your favorite dessert?

Not a dessert person. If I had to pick one I do eat now and then it’d be a sinful slice of cheese cake with blueberry topping. I do love blueberries.

Often in character development, writers are taught to write down everything even what a character eats. What do your characters eat?

Meat and blood! They eat pretty much the same thing humans do when they’re in their ‘human’ forms. My cats can really be greedy and since they keep the vamp half of themselves subdued most of the time, they don’t have a problem ingesting solid food. My straight up vamps can eat if they choose to, though it’s not a necessity. In CLAWLESS, there is some goings-on with popcorn and there’s a part in SCREWED AGAIN where Peter, the vamp, puts mayo on a sandwich for Purple and she hates it!

Do any of your characters have a quirk or unusual trait?

Whew, my characters are a quirk of fate. I guess you could say the green eyes are a trait. All Kind have weird, vivid green eyes. The spotted and striped cats have hair that is multicolor stripes when they change to men, or women. That’s pretty unusual…well, guess not if you’re a woman who has had streaks put in your hair! *laughing* In fact, in CLAWLESS, there is a funny little conversation between Jenna and Grif about why the jaguars don’t have polka dotted hair!

What gave you the idea for your latest book?

Stonehenge and statues. *grins*

J., please, tell our viewers about your book.

I have one releasing January 29th but we’ll talk about CLAWLESS, which releases February 19th from Eirelander Publishing. Here’s a blurb:

An act of kindness can change your life–forever.

Griffin Hayes knew what Jenna Sahara was and he didn’t care. So what if she was a member of the Kind? She took his breath away. And his passion for her knew no bounds.

A vampyre infected lioness from the Sovereign Kind, Jenna has never been so drawn to any man more than the mortal Griffin. And he’s fated to be her true mate. Consumed by sadness because she is different, Jenna is determined to have Griffin in her life no matter what.

First she’ll have to save him from her family who holds the power of life and death over him.

You’ll be able to buy it at: and there is a trailer at:

At Eirelander you can also find A PANTHER’S FLIGHT which has an excerpt and trailer at This is still one of my favorite stories because I loved writing about Fane and Edy and their passionate journey to discover love.

Did you find out anything extraordinary in the course of writing the book?

When I started and did some research on all the big cats–lions, tigers, jaguars–I was amazed at how much I didn’t know. Probably the most extraordinary thing turned out to be disheartening. The majority of them are extinct. I read that there are approximately 7000+/- ( ) tigers left! It saddens me that, like the polar bear, they may not be here at all in years to come.

Since many of our viewers are also writers, please, share a writing tip with us.

Find a good critique partner or group. That’s the best information I can give anyone starting out.

Tell us about your other books.

I have a couple of series at Changeling Press, the EXTRA CREAM Series is about those that protect the Kind and are learning to be less afraid of their vampyre half. COUGAR BY THE TAIL releases January 29th and you can find them all, along with the SCREWED Series about vampyres, here: Over at Ellora’s Cave there’s HARD CASE, about the Kind who love and embrace their vampyre. Also there is the first book in the ANGELS IN LOVE Series, HOPE IN LOVE. I’ve also done a few contemporary stories for them and one, RHYTHM OF LOVE releases February 23rd as part of Ellora’s Cave Dance of Desire Theme. They can all be found at:

Here’s the Blurb for COUGAR BY THE TAIL and you can see the trailer at:

Trent Dallion was screwed. Much older than him, the wily little cougar had him by the balls—and he couldn’t get loose. She’d thanked him for killing her brother. Did she mean it? Or was she playing a game of cat and mouse, waiting for revenge.

Peri Montana tasted her destiny in the blood of the jaguar who took her diseased brother’s life. Mountain born and bred, she wanted nothing to do with the desert cat that possessed more vampyre abilities than she was comfortable with. Could she return to the hot desert nights without literally losing her tail?

And for RHYTHM OF LOVE also with a trailer at

Carter Gates, amateur Latin ballroom dancer, is ready to make a move on his sexy new assistant. Bree’s scent intoxicates him, and her lithe body makes it hard to keep his hands to himself. But Carter owns the company and has one rule—hands off the staff. His body isn’t listening.

Bree’s no better off. She has a taste for her new boss, one she can’t quench. Hiding the fact she’s best friends with his partner, and a dancer herself, she slips into a revealing outfit and his arms…just for one night of sexy, hot competition and a highly erotic tango that gives new meaning to “going up in flames”.

Bree’s friend has other ideas—she wants to keep Carter for herself. However, after spending a passionate evening in Carter’s arms, and his bed, Bree wants more. And she’s determined to get it.

What new projects are in the works? Can you share? Give us cryptic hints?

I can tell you they involve an angel, a man of stone, and there is the one about Rapunzel, *grins* You’ll be surprised at who the father is in my version of the fairy tale!

Before you leave, just one more thing. Please, share with our viewers the funniest scene you’ve ever written.

Hmm, there is a hilarious scene in HOPE IN LOVE between archangels Ramiel and Gabriel about red lilies and Home Depot. Another would have to be the latte scene between Jag and Leron in WITH EXTRA CREAM. Oh, then there’s the scene with a pistol between Leron and Cory in HOT TIN ROOF. I can’t share them here! *laughing* But folks can buy the books.

Thanks, J., for being on Nights of Passion. It’s always fun having your here.

  1. cheese cake with bluberry topping. yum yum. But then blood and meat is a pretty good diet also. lol

Cats are so strong and graceful. It is a real shame to see their numbers diminishing. I will buy clawless when it comes available.

  2. Wow Joann, you’ve been busy! Did you write the fairy tale for a particular call? Just curious cuz I just did one on Rumpelstiltskin LOL Good luck with sales!

  3. Gary, part of what I love about cats is their gracefulness, and they are so majestic. I’m a meat lover too! Thanks for coming by.

Sandi, I am doing that for a call! *wink* Just need to finish the dang thing and edit it lol. Thanks for your good wishes.

  4. Hey, J, don’t put me in the contest, but I wanted to stop by and support one of my favorite authors.

  5. V.J., you’re pretty awesome yourself, lady. Thanks bunches.

  6. Dianne Hemming says:

Sounds like fun reads! I love to read and keep an eye out for books that reach out and gab me by the throat!!
Warm Fuzzies and Good luck all!
Dianne( in slightly freezing Nova Scotia)

  7. Pat M says:

love ur books. will purchase ‘Cougar” as soon as it’s released

  8. Sandy says:

J, my all time favorite is your Panther book.

It saddens my heart that the big majestic cats are being diminished, too. Mankind just keeps expanding and taking away their habitats, so how can they survive. We must stop building our populations, so other life forms can continue to exist, too.

    • Sandy, I think Fane, even with his angst, may be my favorite hero! I wish we could find a way to allow the cats, and all animals, continue to have a place in the world. Thanks for your support and help.

  9. Robin Cain says:

I don’t need to be in the contest either, but I, too, wanted to stop by and support you. Your writing career is an inspiration and it’s great to see you have such success.

  10. Sarina Hermann says:

Hali congrats on both releases! I hope everything is going great with both, and I honestly cannot wait to see them. You do have to admit that your characters sound delicious, and they are very tempting.

  11. susan leech says:

Think I am just under the wire here but needed to say hello and hope you are fine. As a cat lover..these books fits my life style very much. susan L.

  12. I’d like to thank Susan for taking the time to have me in today. It’s always a pleasure to visit Nights of Passion blog.

Thanks to everyone who came out to wish me success.

  13. Hey J!

Well, I always knew you were up to ‘something’, just didn’t realize this ‘something’ was so many delicious-sounding books!

    Way to go, girl!

Hmm, a cuddly cat who also keeps you very ‘warm’ at night… Sounds like my idea of an ideal partner… *wink*

Big hugs, and keep on rocking!

Oh yeah too, I don’t need to be in the contest this time!!

  14. Z! Glad you made it. I’m always up to something naughty…and it usually involves a delicious man or beast! Thanks for stopping by.

  15. Candi Wall says:

    Huge congrats.

    You HAVE been busy!
Sorry I’m late getting here, but wanted to swing in to say ‘Keep up the great work!’

  16. Tracey D says:

I hope I’m not too late to ask a question.

Do you think book trailers help in book sales? What is the appoximate amount of time does it take to creat one?

    • Hi Tracy. Great question. I’m not sure if they do a lot but they do gather some interest. I’ve had people comment on them which means they’re looking and thats good! After selecting the royalty free music and pictures which is the most time consuming part for me (about an hour to find just what I want!), the trailer itself takes about an hour. More than anything it gives me a break from writing and lets me be creative in another way. Hope I’ve answered your question and thanks for stopping by.

  17. Joann my dear, you are such an inspiration to me. My apologies for being late, but I just wanted to stop by to give you support.

You have been a busy bee, and I’m so happy for you. It saddens me to see these beautiful creatures diminish due to greed and an uncaring nature. I hae always been a cat person. I love their independent personalities and how graceful they are. Cats are mysterious, calm, and soothing spirits. ; )

Take care, and blessings to you. I know you’ll have many sales!

    • Charisma, you’re never too late! Thanks for all your kind words. I wish our world was big enough to house us all in peace and harmony. I find such pleasure in my 4 kitties–all but one adopted from the wild bunches in the neighborhood–and talk about learning humility!

      Glad you made it.
